This year I was lucky enough to be approved for a three day Press badge to cover the biggest Comic and Pop Culture Expo in Los Angeles. Unfortunately, due to some personal matters, I could only attend one day (Sunday). But let me tell you, the one day was action packed!
I’ve been attending the Comikaze Expo in Los Angeles since it’s inaugural date in November 2011. It was a small expo with some cool stuff. Each year it has gotten bigger and bigger with more people in attendance and I honestly, could not be any happier that I got to witness the growth in the expo.
But let’s get back to my one day at Comikaze. It was a warm Sunday and I was set to cosplay as Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel but it wasn’t looking like I was going to be able to attend. I was deeply upset and decided to take matters into my own hands. Thankfully, a wonderful friend of mine offered to go/ride with me and thus started our quest.
Once you reach the vicinity of the Los Angeles Convention Center in Downtown LA, you will see all kinds of people decked out in their “nerd-gear” or all out in their gorgeous cosplays. I felt like I was home.
This year I focused a lot of my time in Artist Alley. Don’t know what Artist Alley is? It’s a section of the showroom/expo floor where artists are able to showcase and sell their pieces of work, whatever that may be. You will find prints, originals, clothing, jewelry, and self-published comic books. It’s truly one of my favorite parts of any Con because you really feel a sense of community. I talked to so many wonderful artists and bought a few prints as well.

But after all that, one of my favorite parts of any con is the cosplayers. Honestly, there have been a handfull of times where cosplayers are not the nicest and it’s honestly quite daunting. However, I’ve never had a bad experience with a cosplayer at Comikaze and this year was no different. There were such wonderful and clever cosplays this year that I was just so totally excited to be around everything.
Overall, I will continue to go to Comikaze because, although it’s a “smaller” con, it won’t be for long. There is no doubt in my mind that Stan Lee’s Comikaze Expo will grow to be the Comic Convention everyone wants to attend in Los Angeles.
